We think it's safe to say that the first year of the high school writing camp on GVSU's Allendale campus was a huge success! Seventeen young writers, four undergraduate students, and two area teachers wrote alongside one another, claiming that "No rules, just write" not only applies to Outback Steakhouse, but also to summer writing camp. As many of the young writers had never been on GVSU's campus, it was exciting to hear many proclaim that they'd be taking more "courses" in the beautiful honors college building in their futures. Along with the goofy Outback saying, the group decided that James Thurber said it best: "Don't get it right, just get it written." When the academic pressures are off, it's amazing what authors can do.
LMWP Teacher Consultants Jill Annable and Chris Forward facilitated this first annual high school writing camp. Lake Michigan Writing Project plans to offer another writing camp next summer, so be sure to watch for announcements and application information throughout this school year!
